How to Pack a Carry-On Bag
Travel Packing Tips
One of the biggest challenges of traveling is packing. We've all been there: you're packing for a trip, and you can't decide what to bring, so you end up overpacking and bringing way too much stuff. I’ll admit, I used to be a checked bag girlie (thanks for the free bags American Airlines), but challenged myself to pack carry-on only for our week long Iceland tripbecause I was so afraid of my bag getting lost.
Game. Changer. I am a changed woman and now fly almost exclusively with a carry on with some exceptions.
Learning how to pack a carry-on can make your trip a lot easier and more enjoyable. Packing with only a carry-on can be a game changer, as it saves you time, money, and hassle. Let’s discuss how to pack carry-on only for your next trip - I promise you can do it!
Benefits of Packing with a Carry-On
Traveling with only a carry-on offers a multitude of advantages that can significantly enhance your travel experience. Let's delve deeper into these benefits to understand why packing light can be a game-changer for your trips.
1. Save Money on Checked Baggage Fees: One of the most immediate perks of packing with a carry-on is the money you save on checked baggage fees. Airlines often charge hefty fees for checked bags, especially for international flights. By opting for a carry-on, you can avoid these expenses altogether, leaving you with more budget to spend on experiences and souvenirs at your destination.
2. Streamlined Airport Experience: Navigating airports can be stressful, especially during peak travel seasons. When you travel with a carry-on, you skip the check-in lines for baggage drop-off, and you don't have to wait at the baggage claim carousel upon arrival. This means you can breeze through the airport with ease, saving valuable time and reducing travel-related stress.
3. Eliminate the Risk of Lost or Damaged Luggage: We've all heard horror stories of lost or mishandled luggage. When you pack with a carry-on, you keep your belongings close and under your control throughout the journey. This significantly reduces the chances of your luggage being lost, damaged, or ending up in the wrong destination.
4. Enhance Mobility and Flexibility: With a carry-on, you enjoy unparalleled mobility during your travels. You can quickly move from one place to another without being burdened by a heavy suitcase. This freedom is especially valuable if you plan to explore multiple destinations or use public transportation during your trip. Plus, carrying less weight means you'll have more energy to enjoy your adventures.
5. Encourage Thoughtful Packing: Traveling with limited space in a carry-on requires thoughtful and intentional packing. You'll find yourself carefully selecting essential items and versatile clothing that can be mixed and matched. This helps you become a more conscious and efficient packer, ensuring you bring only what you truly need for your journey.
6. Minimize Overpacking: It's a common temptation to overpack, "just in case." However, traveling with a carry-on forces you to prioritize and pack only the essentials. By embracing a minimalist approach, you'll discover that you can still enjoy your trip without the burden of unnecessary items.
7. Avoid Baggage Mishaps: Traditional checked suitcases are susceptible to mishaps like broken wheels or damaged zippers due to rough handling during transit. A carry-on is generally more durable and less prone to such issues, ensuring that your luggage remains intact throughout your journey.
8. Easy Transfers and Connections: When you have a tight connection or need to transfer between flights, having a carry-on allows you to move swiftly and efficiently. You won't waste time waiting for checked baggage to be unloaded and reloaded onto the next flight, reducing the risk of missed connections.
How To Pack A Carry-On To Maximize Space
Before you start packing, you need to choose the right carry-on luggage. The size and type of luggage you choose will depend on your travel needs. Some factors to consider include the length of your trip, the activities you'll be doing, and the climate of your destination. Make sure to check the airline's carry-on size restrictions before purchasing your luggage to ensure it meets their guidelines.
When it comes to choosing the right carry-on luggage, there are several options available in the market, from backpacks to rolling suitcases. A backpack may be a better option for those who are planning to do some hiking or need to carry their luggage around with them, while a rolling suitcase may be a better option for those who prefer to wheel their luggage around. It's important to choose a carry-on that is durable, lightweight, and fits within the airline's size restrictions.
Do I get a hard shell or soft shell bag?
Great question! I personally prefer hardshell bags because of the aesthetics (guilty) and I feel like they’re more durable. However you can definitely stuff a soft shell bag with more things, though beware overstuffing and ripping your zipper (you don’t wanna have to buy a new bag overseas, trust me)
Four wheel or two wheel?
I’m not gonna lie - you wouldn’t catch me with a 2 wheeled bag now. Not only is it a lot more strain on your shoulder, especially if it’s heavy, but rolling it is just a smoother experience. And for all my four-wheel haters, you can roll it on two wheels across carpet, I promise. Some people argue that 4 wheel bags have less packing space as the wheels do take up space, but I find it negligible.
How To Pack A Suitcase To Maximize Space
Now that you have your carry-on luggage, it's time to start packing. Here are some tips to help you pack efficiently:
Roll Clothes Instead of Folding
Rolling clothes is a space-saving technique that also helps prevent wrinkles. You can roll your clothes tightly, and they will take up less space in your luggage than if you were to fold them. Plus you can decide not to pack a portable steamer if you so please.
Use Packing Cubes or Compression Bags
carry-on packing cubes or compression bags are great for organizing your items and compressing them to maximize space. You can use packing cubes to separate your clothes by type, such as shirts, pants, and underwear, or by outfit.
Compression bags, on the other hand, allow you to vacuum-seal your clothes to reduce their size even further. You can use a compression bag for items like jackets or sweaters, which can take up a lot of space in your luggage. You can buy ones that come with a small hand pump so you can re-seal on your way home!
Pack Multi-Purpose Items
To save space in your luggage, bring items that can be used for multiple purposes. For example, a scarf can be used as a blanket or a sarong that can be worn as a dress. This will help you cut down on the number of items you need to pack.
Wear Bulky Items While Traveling
If you're bringing bulky items like a jacket or boots, wear them while traveling to save space in your luggage. This will also keep you warm and comfortable during your flight. Yes, you may look a little ridiculous wearing your faux fur coat and your hiking boots, but we’re about space saving not fashion here.
Minimize Toiletries and Electronics
Only bring what you need when it comes to toiletries and electronics (i.e. maybe you don’t actually need to bring your Dyson AirWrap). Consider purchasing travel-sized items to save space in your luggage. You can also use a toiletry bag to keep your items organized and compact.
Maximizing Space in Your Carry-On
Efficiently utilizing the limited space in your carry-on is essential to packing everything you need without feeling weighed down. Here are some tried-and-tested techniques to make the most of your carry-on space:
1. Roll and Bundle Packing Method: Instead of simply rolling individual clothing items, try the "Roll and Bundle" packing method. Start by laying out all your clothes flat, then roll them up together into a compact bundle. This technique not only saves space but also helps prevent wrinkles and keeps your clothes organized.
2. Layering Clothes: Layering clothes within your carry-on can help maximize space. Lay larger items like jeans or dresses flat at the bottom of the bag, then place lighter and more flexible items like t-shirts or blouses on top. Repeat this process to create layers and avoid any wasted space.
3. Utilize Packing Cubes or Compression Bags: Packing cubes and compression bags are valuable tools for efficient packing. Group similar items together and place them in separate packing cubes, making it easier to find what you need. Compression bags are especially helpful for squeezing out excess air, reducing the overall volume of your clothing.
4. Fill Empty Spaces: Don't let any space go to waste. Fill small gaps between larger items with rolled-up socks, scarves, or other accessories. Use the space inside your shoes to store items like chargers, belts, or even small toiletries. Just be sure to place these items in a sealed bag to prevent any contact with the soles of your shoes.
5. Wear Bulky Items During Travel: If you plan to bring bulkier clothing items, like jackets or boots, consider wearing them during your travel days. Not only does this free up valuable space in your carry-on, but it also keeps you warm and comfortable during your journey.
6. Pack Versatile and Neutral Clothing: Opt for clothing pieces that can be mixed and matched easily to create multiple outfits. Neutral colors and classic styles are more versatile and allow you to create various looks with fewer items.
7. Roll Clothes Instead of Folding: Rolling clothes not only saves space but also helps prevent wrinkles. Roll your clothes tightly to minimize the space they occupy while ensuring they remain neat and tidy.
8. Use Travel-Size Toiletries: Avoid packing full-sized toiletries that can take up precious space. Instead, opt for travel-sized containers or purchase toiletries at your destination.
9. Choose Lightweight Luggage: Invest in a lightweight carry-on that won't add unnecessary weight to your packing. This leaves more weight allowance for your actual belongings.
