Planning a trip to Iceland? Look no further! With its stunning landscapes, vibrant culture, and unique experiences, Iceland is an ideal destination for adventure seekers and nature enthusiasts alike. In this article, we will guide you through a six-day itinerary along the mesmerizing south coast of Iceland in September. From majestic waterfalls to black sand beaches and breathtaking glaciers, get ready to explore some of the most iconic sights that this Nordic wonderland has to offer.

When Is a Good Time to Visit Iceland?

Choosing the right time to visit Iceland largely depends on your preferences and the experiences you seek. For those eager to witness the mesmerizing Aurora Borealis dance across the night sky, the winter months from late September to mid-April are ideal. Winter also offers the opportunity to explore ice caves and experience the ethereal landscapes draped in a glistening blanket of snow.

If you prefer milder weather and the chance to explore the famous Ring Road and its surrounding attractions, consider visiting during the summer months from June to August. This period presents longer daylight hours, ideal for exploring Iceland's vast wilderness and undertaking thrilling outdoor activities such as hiking, whale watching, and horseback riding.

Spring (April to May) and autumn (September to October) offer a beautiful balance, with fewer tourists and the chance to witness the breathtaking transition of seasons. The landscapes bloom with vibrant colors in spring, while autumn showcases a magical display of golden foliage. Ultimately, each season in Iceland possesses its own unique charm, making any time of the year a good time to visit this captivating island.

We went in mid September to hit shoulder season, resulting in lower prices and less crowds. We were also blessed with beautiful weather.

What is the Weather in Iceland Like in September?

In September, Iceland transitions from summer to autumn, resulting in unique weather conditions that showcase the island's natural beauty in a new light. The weather during this time of the year is quite changeable, with mild temperatures and the potential for rain, wind, and even early snowfall in the later part of the month.

Average temperatures in September typically range from 7°C to 11°C (45°F to 52°F) during the day and can drop to 3°C to 7°C (37°F to 45°F) at night. While this might not sound too cold, it's essential to note that Iceland's weather can be quite unpredictable, and temperatures can fluctuate throughout the day. It's advisable to dress in layers, so you can easily adapt to changing conditions.

September brings gradually decreasing daylight hours, with around 12-13 hours of daylight at the beginning of the month and approximately 10-11 hours towards the end. The shorter days provide an excellent opportunity to witness the captivating Northern Lights, also known as the Aurora Borealis, as the nights become darker.

As Iceland experiences rapid weather changes, it's essential to come prepared for a variety of conditions. Rain showers are common, so packing waterproof clothing and sturdy footwear is vital for staying comfortable while exploring the breathtaking landscapes. Additionally, having a warm and windproof jacket, as well as a hat and gloves, will help shield you from the chill of the autumn air.

Despite the potential for changing weather, September offers a beautiful time to visit Iceland. The landscapes are painted with golden hues, and the fall foliage adds a touch of warmth to the already stunning scenery. Fewer tourists also mean more tranquil experiences at popular attractions, providing a chance to savor the natural wonders of Iceland in a peaceful and serene ambiance. Whether you're seeking to explore glaciers, hike through lush valleys, or immerse yourself in the magic of Reykjavik, September in Iceland promises an enchanting journey filled with captivating beauty and unique experiences.

Do You Need a Car in Iceland?

While not an absolute necessity, having a rental car in Iceland offers the freedom to explore the country at your own pace and uncover hidden gems off the beaten path. The country's extensive road network, including the famous Ring Road (Route 1), provides access to some of the most breathtaking landscapes and scenic routes. Having a car allows you to stop whenever you please to capture stunning photos of waterfalls, volcanic landscapes, and coastal vistas. Car rentals are also easy to come by at both the airport and in main parts of larger tows.

However, if you prefer a more guided experience or don't wish to drive, organized tours and shuttle services are available to take you to popular destinations like the Golden Circle and the Blue Lagoon. In Reykjavik, the capital city, you can easily navigate using public transportation and walking.

Ultimately, whether you choose to rent a car or opt for organized tours, Iceland's captivating beauty and captivating attractions await exploration. Keep in mind that driving some roads in winter may not be possible so always check conditions before planning your road trip!

How Much Should I Budget for 6 Days in Iceland?

Iceland is renowned for its incredible landscapes, but it's also known for its higher cost of living. For a comfortable and immersive six-day trip to Iceland, a budget of around $2,500 to $3,500 USD per person is recommended. This budget should cover accommodations, meals, transportation (if renting a car), activities, and some discretionary spending.

Accommodations in Iceland vary, but budget travelers can find hostels and guesthouses, while those seeking more comfort can opt for hotels or cozy guest cottages. Meals can range from affordable street food to upscale dining experiences, and setting aside around $50-$100 per day for food is reasonable.

Activities, such as glacier hiking, exploring ice caves, and experiencing the Blue Lagoon, may require additional costs. Plan for around $100-$200 per activity, depending on your choices.

While Iceland can be a bit pricey, the experiences and memories you'll create amid its astonishing natural wonders are truly priceless. Proper budgeting ensures you can make the most of your six-day adventure without worrying about financial constraints, allowing you to fully immerse yourself in the magic of Iceland.
