What You Need to Know Before Visiting Sky Lagoon in Iceland

Iceland's ethereal landscapes have long been a magnet for travelers seeking adventure and natural beauty. Among the myriad of attractions that dot this island nation, hot springs and geothermal spas are undoubtedly some of the most sought-after experiences. While the Blue Lagoon has traditionally reigned supreme in this category, a new player has entered the scene, promising a unique and rejuvenating experience - Sky Lagoon. In this guide, we'll explore what you need to know before visiting Sky Lagoon in Iceland, including the different packages and what sets it apart from the iconic Blue Lagoon.

Sky Lagoon Location

Located in the bustling capital of Reykjavik, Sky Lagoon offers visitors the perfect blend of convenience and stunning natural beauty. Unlike the somewhat remote Blue Lagoon, which requires a drive from Reykjavik, Sky Lagoon is a mere 10-minute drive or a short walk from the city center. This accessibility makes it an attractive option for travelers who have limited time or prefer not to venture too far from the capital.

The Atmosphere

While both Sky Lagoon and the Blue Lagoon offer the chance to soak in warm, mineral-rich waters amidst Iceland's stark, otherworldly landscapes, each has a unique atmosphere. Sky Lagoon aims to provide a more tranquil and immersive experience. The lagoon is surrounded by a stunning 230-foot-long infinity-edge design that seems to blend seamlessly with the ocean and the horizon, giving bathers an unparalleled sense of being at one with nature. It's a perfect spot for those seeking serenity and relaxation.

Packages and Pricing

Sky Lagoon offers several packages to cater to different tastes and preferences. Here are some of the core options:

Sky Package: This premium package includes the Seven-Step Ritual and private changing facilities. Starting at $97 USD per person

Pure Package: The classic and most popular package for those wanting to experience the ritual and lagoon, has public changing facilities. Starting at $74 USD per person

Pure Lite Package: If you are short on time, the Pure Lite Pass with access to the Lagoon only is a great option for a quick getaway. Starting at $51 USD per person

I’ve done both the Sky and Pure packages and personally feel like the upgrade cost to the Sky package is worth it! The private changing and shower areas are really nice and less crowded overall. Don’t panic at the thought of ‘public’ changing rooms though, as the actual shower areas are stalls and are closed off. You must shower without anything on before entering any pools in Iceland and the Sky Lagoon is no exception, so if you are shy at all I would recommend the Sky Package! You can also upgrade the same day if there is room.

Experience the 7-Step Ritual at Sky Lagoon

My favorite part - and one of the main appeals of the Sky Lagoon - is the luxurious 7 step ritual. Note, you can only go through the entire ritual one time, but you can re enter the cold plunge and lagoon as often as you’d like.

Step 1 - Embrace Geothermal Warmth: Upon arrival, you'll be greeted by the comforting embrace of geothermal warmth. Relax in the lagoon, where you can inhale the revitalizing ocean air. This initial stage of the journey allows you to unwind in the soothing waters, absorbing the natural warmth, and immersing yourself in the serene ambiance while soaking in the breathtaking vistas.

Step 2 - Revitalize with a Cold Plunge: Awaken your senses in our cold plunge, inspired by Iceland's ancient pools. Cold therapy invigorates your body, boosts your immune system, and reduces inflammation. It also triggers a natural endorphin rush, leaving you feeling refreshed and invigorated.

Step 3 - Cleanse in the Sauna: Let the sauna's enveloping heat open your pores, facilitating the removal of toxins and purification of your skin. Here, you can immerse yourself in coastal fragrances and soothing acoustics, all while gazing through Iceland's largest single window, offering breathtaking views.

Step 4 - Rejuvenation with a Cold Mist: To balance the heat, transition gradually through our revitalizing cold mist. This refreshing experience reawakens your senses, revitalizing your mind, body, and soul in the process.

Step 5 - Exfoliate with a Sea Salt Scrub: It's time for a gentle invigoration. Apply our signature Sky Body Scrub to exfoliate your skin slowly. Feel the rejuvenating effects both inside and out. For optimal results, wear the scrub into the steam room, allowing your skin to absorb the therapeutic elements of the ritual fully. The Sky Body Scrub contains almond oil and sesame seed oil.

Step 6 - Relax in the Steam Room: The steam room will once again open your pores, enabling your skin to absorb the essential therapeutic components of the ritual. This stage maximizes the hydrating benefits of the Sky Body Scrub, providing a final step in your healing journey. Simply relax and allow your body to embrace these last moments of rejuvenation.

Step 7 - Refresh in the Shower: Conclude your experience with a gentle, refreshing shower. Close your eyes, savor the results, and cherish the moment. From head to toe, both inside and out, you'll feel a sense of relaxation, rejuvenation, and renewed energy. Take your time and fully enjoy the transformation.

Sky Lagoon vs Blue Lagoon

While the Blue Lagoon is a world-renowned attraction in its own right, Sky Lagoon distinguishes itself in several ways:

  1. Location: As mentioned earlier, Sky Lagoon's proximity to Reykjavik makes it a convenient choice for travelers staying in the city.

  2. Atmosphere: Sky Lagoon's design and layout create a more intimate and serene atmosphere compared to the larger and busier Blue Lagoon. The age of entry for Sky Lagoon is also older, being 12, while the Blue Lagoon is only 2, meaning the Sky Lagoon definitely feels more like an adult oasis.

  3. Architecture: The unique infinity-edge design of Sky Lagoon allows guests to feel as though they are floating in the ocean, offering an immersive experience.

  4. The Ritual: While the Blue Lagoon offers face masks in the waters, the unique 7 step ritual is unique to the Sky Lagoon.

In conclusion, Sky Lagoon in Iceland is a fantastic addition to the country's geothermal spa offerings. With its convenient location, serene atmosphere, and variety of packages to suit different preferences, it's a worthwhile experience for anyone visiting Iceland. While the Blue Lagoon remains an iconic attraction, Sky Lagoon's unique features and ambiance set it apart and make it a must-visit destination for those seeking relaxation and rejuvenation amidst Iceland's breathtaking natural beauty.
